The Story Behind The Book

This is book 3 in the Murder Mile series.

The Rainham Volcano Is well-known waste site only a few miles from Romford, on which I based the town of Brackford in the Murder Mile series.

The waste site, which is full of illegally dumped rubbish, has caught fire numerous times over the last several years. The fire brigade has attended the site one hundred and twenty-one times in the last six years, but it still keeps catching fire. A few years before that, the site was used to accommodate a huge underground drug factory.

Local people have been worried about the toxic fumes for a long time, with high incidences of lung diseases, especially asthma in children. But clearing the site will cost millions, and no one can agree on whether the clean-up costs should be paid by the landowner, the local council, or the government.

I simply had to feature a waste site in one of my Murder Mile books. I changed a few facts and made it my own story but, needless to say, it becomes the site of yet another highly illegal activity.

I also introduce Alfie’s daughter, Billie, in this book. She is a dedicated environmental campaigner, which ties the story together nicely, and with Alfie featured prominently, we learn more about his experience in the army, and why he left.

Alfie Cooper is finally putting his life back together after dealing with the debilitating consequences of a career in combat. At last, he’s reuniting with his estranged daughter and he’s nervous as hell.

His daughter, Billie, is back in Brackford, fronting a high-profile environmental campaign to clean up a toxic waste site. But she disappears after a site visit, along with the council employee who accompanied her.

Alfie is determined to find his daughter. But when the council employee is found dead, it becomes clear that something much bigger than the illegal dumping of poisonous chemicals is at work.

He fears the worst. Now, he’ll need to dig deep into his horrific past and revert to the killer he once was or he could lose Billie for good.
