STONE COLD is book 2 in the Murder Mile series. The plot of this book revolves around an old statue of an historical figure of dubious repute. The kernel of the idea came from a real life event that happened in Bristol, in the West of England, nearly six years ago. In June 2020, a large group of anti-racist protestors watched and cheered as an old statue was pulled into Bristol harbour by a group of the protestors. This was a statue of seventeenth century slave trader, Edward Colston. Colston stood for a set of values that, quite rightly, are no longer tolerated in today's society, so dumping the statue in the river was probably a good decision on the part of the protestors. The judge obviously thought so too when he acquitted the four people who were prosecuted for criminal damage later that year. The statue of Edward Colston had ropes attached to enable the protestors to pull it into the water. In Stone Cold, the characters involved use a very similar method, although I gave them a little mechanical help. The statue in Stone Cold has a very different story behind it, and the characters who instigated its demise have very personal reasons for wanting it gone. But they are every bit as passionate about their cause as the protestors who toppled Colston's statue in Bristol. Despite its historical inspiration, the story in Stone Cold is a contemporary one, and the murders in the story relate to the statue in a more current way. You may never look at an old statue in the same way again. |
The clues to the present lie in the past… Rose Marsden is struggling with the revelation that her new friend is a prostitute. So, when the friend goes missing, and her son begs Rose for help, she’s reluctant to get involved. But when a young prostitute’s body is dumped at the base of a local statue, and Rose discovers that her friend was the last person to see the girl alive, she knows she must find her, before somebody else does. As Rose delves deeper, she gets involved with a protest group campaigning to have the statue removed, hoping it will lead her to her missing friend. Instead, the discovery of an innocent schoolgirl’s body in the same place sparks fears of a serial killer. Her friend is still missing. Is it possible that she’s the murderer, or will she become the next victim? |
